Guess What Happened to me Today? - February 2026

When I arrived at a high school flag football game earlier this semester, I expected to see student-athletes competing in one of Colorado’s newest sanctioned sports. What I didn’t expect was a moment that reminded me why education- based athletics matters so deeply.
Standing on the field was Becky Petre, a longtime math teacher at Highlands Ranch High School (Colorado), and my now-adult son’s favorite teacher. For more than 20 years, Petre has shaped students not just through equations and exams, but through her steady presence, high expectations, and genuine care for young people. Seeing her step into the role of a game official felt like a natural extension of who she has always been.

Petre recognized a growing need for officials and chose to serve, earning her certification so students could continue to play and learn. But what she brought to the field went far beyond stripes and a whistle. She communicated with clarity, explained calls with patience, and treated every athlete with respect. In every interaction, her priority was evident: helping students grow through sport.
To countless students and athletes, Petre is a role model – someone who leads with kindness, consistency, and integrity. She reminds us that officiating is not just about enforcing rules, but about supporting the experience of young people.
Because of people like Becky Petre, high school sports remain a place where students feel seen, supported and valued – long after the final whistle.
