Unusual Nicknames: Watervliet Cannoneers

BY NFHS ON February 13, 2025

The town of Watervliet, located in upstate New York, has deep military and industrial roots, due to its connection with Watervliet Arsenal. Established in 1813, the arsenal became a critical site for the manufacturing of artillery, ammunition and weapons, playing a significant role in the nation’s military history, including the Civil War, World Wars I and II. Watervliet High School’s choice of the “Cannoneers” refers to soldiers who operate cannons or artillery pieces, a direct nod to the historical significance of the Watervliet Arsenal.

As the town’s high school teams began to adopt a mascot, the connection to the arsenal’s military roots was an obvious and fitting choice. The Cannoneers symbolized the strength, precision and historical importance of the artillery that had been produced locally. This nickname is a point of pride for Watervliet High School, as it honors both the town’s industrial heritage and the legacy of the soldiers who were integral to the nation’s defense. It serves as a reminder of the town’s significant place in American history and its ongoing connection to the military and industrial sectors.
