  AllTrack is proud to work together with the NFHS to facilitate a custom K-12 Music License that covers the performance licensing requirements of your school for its use of AllTrack music.

  WHO IS ALLTRACK? 

  AllTrack is a digital-era performing rights organization (PRO).   WHY DOES MY SCHOOL NEED A LICENSE? 

  Under US Copyright Law ((17 U.S.C. §110(1)), an educational institution requires a performance license for any uses of copyrighted music other than in the course of “face-to-face teaching activities in a classroom or similar place devoted to instruction”. Common examples of music uses on a school campus that require a performance license include: 

  • Sporting games and competitions, including warm-ups (live music performed by students is exempt) 

  • Cheerleading competitions  

  • Movie nights 

  • Carnivals 

  • School dances 

  • After school non-educational programs 

  • Summer camps 

  • Special events (talent shows, recitals, fundraisers, graduations, 3rd party events on school property) 

  • Live DJs  

  • Livestream music 

  • Broadcast and podcast music 

  • Music used within websites & apps  

  • On-hold music (phone systems) 

  Securing a license will cover all of your school’s AllTrack performance licensing needs with the exception of music used at cheerleading competitions/shows/exhibitions. During the licensing process, you will be asked whether your school hosts events of this nature. If so, an AllTrack representative will contact your school after your standard license is complete with information on whether a separate cheerleading competition license is required. 

  HOW TO OBTAIN A MUSIC LICENSE FOR YOUR SCHOOL 

  Securing an AllTrack music license for your school only takes approximately 2 minutes. By registering at the link below, your school will be licensed immediately for its use of AllTrack music. Please have your school’s name, address, number of students and a credit/debit card readily available. No paperwork or calls are required.

  After receiving feedback from K-12 schools and districts across the country, the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) is working together with Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI), the global leader in rights management, to offer its association members a new K-12 School music license.

  A BMI music license offers K-12 schools across the country copyright clearance to play any of the more than 17 million songs that BMI licenses. The license also includes a locations rider so each district can cover multiple schools under one license including off-site events for faculty and administration. Here’s how you can get started:

  How do we know if we are playing BMI Music? What songs are in BMI’s repertoire?

  Currently, BMI represents the public performance rights in over 17 million musical works created and owned by more than 1.1 million songwriters, composers and music publishers in all genres of music.  You can search the entire repertoire of music by song title, artist, songwriter, composer or publisher, including songs that are 100% BMI, at https://repertoire.bmi.com/.

  What is Songview?

  Songview is a data platform developed by ASCAP and BMI, the nation’s two largest performance rights organizations (PROs), to provide the public with a comprehensive view of ownership shares for the vast majority of works licensed in the United States. With Songview integrated into our databases, ASCAP and BMI are able to display more detailed, authoritative and consistent copyright ownership data for performing rights for over 20 million songs in our combined repertoires.   What Types of Musical Performances Does a BMI Music License Cover?

  The BMI Music License for Schools covers, but is not limited to, live or recorded performance by or at the school’s:

  Musical Attractions: concerts: operas, chamber music, symphonies; stage shows: musicals, plays, variety/talent shows, recitals

  Sporting Events and Performing Groups: games, pep rallies; student band/orchestra, drama/theater club

  Special Events: orientation, graduation, school dances, fundraisers, fairs/festivals

  Administration Use: classrooms/hallways/common areas, music-on-hold, website and intranet transmissions, school radio broadcasting stations and closed-circuit TV, gyms, fitness centers, athletic facilities, club or student union meetings

  We want to upload/livestream an event with music using an online platform. Will the BMI license cover us for that?

  Yes, if the performance will be put on your website, a BMI music license will cover that. For livestreaming on social media, a BMI license will cover the public performance rights, but the platform you use may require additional licenses, including sync or mechanical.  If you plan to livestream, please contact a BMI representative at (877) 264-2136 for more information.

  We want to perform a musical revue with our students. Will the BMI license cover us for that?

  If you are taking musical pieces from different plays and performing them in one show, then BMI licenses the performing rights. However, the right to perform shows in their entirety – known as the “grand right” – such as “Fiddler on The Roof” or “Cabaret,” on the legitimate stage, must be obtained directly from the publishers of the music or the producers of the show.

  Global Music Rights

  After receiving feedback from K-12 schools and districts from across the country, the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) is working together with Global Music Rights (“GMR”), a music public performing rights organization, to offer its K-12 schools a custom music license.

  A GMR license offers K-12 schools across the country copyright clearance to publicly perform musical compositions from some of the most accomplished artists and songwriters of our time and the past. By licensing the rights of multiple songwriters under a single license, working with GMR will save schools the time, expense, and burden of contacting and obtaining permissions from thousands of individual copyright owners.

  Why Do K-12 Schools Need A License?

  Musical compositions are intellectual property and, like other forms of property, they belong to their creators and owners. The United States Copyright Act grants certain exclusive rights to these owners, including the right to publicly perform their music. If your school publicly performs music without obtaining the necessary advance permission from copyright owners, you may be in violation of federal copyright law.

  Types of Musical Public Performances Covered by a GMR License:

  School Events: school dances, graduation, festivals/fairs, orientation, fundraisers

  In-School Use: common areas, school radio broadcasting stations, gyms/athletic facilities, intranet transmissions, student/faculty meetings

  Sporting Events: games, sport practice, pep-rallies, student band/orchestra/choir

  Musical Attractions: concerts, stage shows, talent shows, recitals

  What Kind of Music Can I Play With a GMR License?

  A GMR license grants K-12 schools the legal authorization to publicly perform music from GMR-represented artists, such as: Harry Styles, Drake, Bruno Mars, Bruce Springsteen, John Lennon, Pharrell Williams, Nicki Minaj, Shawn Mendes, Jimmy Buffett, Pearl Jam, Bad Bunny, Jon Bon Jovi, Lizzo, Journey, Prince, The Killers, Sam Hunt, and many more.
