Unusual Nicknames: Newell (South Dakota) Irrigators
BY NFHS ON April 8, 2025 | 2025, APRIL, HST

When your community and high school are named in honor of the primary architect in bringing water to the dry plains of South Dakota, deciding on a mascot is easy. Frederick Newell helped lead President Theodore Roosevelt’s effort to irrigate the American West, including South Dakota, leading to the city’s high school claim to Irrigators as its nickname. As the only high school in the country with the nickname, it uniquely honors the area that provides water to the surrounding farmland.
