Unusual Nicknames: Logansport, Ind., Berries

Logansport (Indiana) High School’s nickname is the Berries and it uses Felix the Cat as its mascot. Both the nickname and mascot have a long history with the school.
The Berries nickname is believed to come from the 1920s when the school’s basketball team was referred to as the Berries, perhaps referencing a loganberry. Another theory suggests the name came from the saying, “That’s the berries,” meaning that’s the best.
The origin of Felix as the mascot is also uncertain. It debuted in 1926 and is the oldest recognized mascot in Indiana. The most likely origin involves a stuffed cat that was given to the basketball team’s star player. While it generally remained in the locker room, the team brought the cat out to the court at halftime after a poor first half. The game’s momentum turned and Logansport won, and Felix had become the school’s mascot.
