Unusual Nicknames: Catasauqua Rough Riders

Some description

Pennsylvania is well known for its Quakers and Happy Valleys, and less known for Cowboys. However, the athletes of Catasauqua High School in Northampton, Pennsylvania, are known as the Rough Riders. The official Rough Rider mascot originated in 1936 after the school paper asked for suggestions. A middle school student suggested the name after she wrote an essay about Teddy Roosevelt. Catasauqua plays an annual rivalry football game against the Northampton Konkrete Kids, who were featured in the November issue of High School Today.

*If you know of a school with an unusual nickname and want it to appear in High School Today, please submit your information to Bruce Howard at bhoward@nfhs.org.
