For nearly a century, Pony Lewis Field has been the centerpiece of Morgantown High School’s campus.
Built in 1927 as part of the original campus design, the school’s buildings were arranged around a central athletic field. This intentional layout makes the stadium a focal point of school life.
The field is named for Clarence “Pony” Lewis, a standout Morgantown High athlete in the 1920s. A three-time all-state football player, Lewis helped lead the 1927 team to an undefeated season, securing his place among the most celebrated athletes in the school’s early history.
The nearly 5,000-seat stadium is home to the Mohigans football program, as well as soccer and lacrosse competitions. It also hosts major school events, including graduation ceremonies, marching band showcases and other community gatherings.
Over the decades, the field has hosted numerous high-profile games and playoff matchups.
In 2025, the Mohigans football team defeated Jefferson 52-21 in a Class AAAA semifinal at Pony Lewis Field, advancing to their first state championship game since 2005. Beyond football, Pony Lewis Field has served as a site for championship-level events in other sports, including West Virginia Scholastic Lacrosse Association state tournaments in multiple years, bringing top teams and players from across the state to Morgantown.
Ongoing improvements — including a modern video board and expanded broadcasting capabilities added in 2011 — have helped make it one of the top venues to catch a game in West Virginia, blending tradition with modern amenities.
