Take or Simulate Taking a Signal from the Catcher

The NFHS pitching regulations are designed to promote fair play and maintain consistency throughout the game. Before beginning the pitching motion, with the hands separated, the pitcher is required to simulate or visibly take a signal from the catcher while in possession of the ball and in contact with the pitcher's plate. This requirement helps ensure that the pitcher has legally engaged in the pitching sequence and prevents attempts to gain an unfair advantage through quick pitches or deceptive actions.

Umpires should be attentive to pitchers who immediately begin their motion without first simulating or receiving a signal from the catcher. Coaches are encouraged to educate pitchers on establishing a consistent pre-pitch routine that clearly demonstrates compliance with this requirement. Proper adherence promotes game integrity and reduces confusion for participants and umpires.

One-Way Electronic Communication

The rules now permit both the pitcher and/or the catcher to receive one-way electronic communication from a coach in the dugout while the team is on defense. This change reflects the continued evolution of technology in education-based athletics and provides teams with an additional method of communicating strategy and game management information.

Participants should understand that electronic communication must be one-way only. The pitcher and/or the catcher may receive information but may not electronically transmit information back through the device. State associations, coaches and umpires should familiarize themselves with any equipment requirements and ensure devices are used in a manner that does not disrupt the flow or pace of the game.

Coaches are reminded that technology is intended to enhance communication and instruction while maintaining the educational values and sportsmanship standards of school sports.

NFHS Authentication Mark

The NFHS Authenticating Mark ensures easy identification of inflated and non-inflated balls used in interscholastic competition for which the NFHS writes playing rules. All such balls are required to display the NFHS Authenticating Mark.

The use of conforming equipment is essential to the integrity of contests played under the NFHS rules. This mark helps to promote a level playing field by ensuring consistency in the equipment being used. The mark allows for the development of more sophisticated standards in balls and clearly communicates to administrators, coaches, and umpires that these standards are being met.

Non-compliance with these requirements will be reported to the state association for potential penalties, following the contest. Administrators and coaches play a pivotal role in making sure all inflated and non-inflated balls meet these specifications. They must instill the importance of proper equipment use through consistent reinforcement during the pre-competition certification meeting and throughout the season. Game umpires must also remain vigilant and report any non-compliant balls to the state association office.
