Unusual Nicknames: Barnwell Warhorses

By NFHS on November 10, 2015 hst Print

Located in South Carolina’s Lowcountry, Barnwell High School’s athletes are known as Warhorses. The nickname came about several years ago when the Barnwell community was looking for a high school mascot. The town’s Clemson University fans suggested the Tigers, while University of South Carolina fans lobbied for Gamecocks. With neither side budging, someone suggested Warhorses, which stuck. It appears, however, the Gamecock fans got their way. A warhorse is another name for a champion fighting rooster.
